Cades Cove Vehicle-Free Wednesdays: The Best Bike Ride in the Smoky Mountains
There's no better way to experience Cades Cove than on two wheels.
Imagine pedaling through the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains with no vehicle traffic…just fresh mountain air, breathtaking scenery, and the possibility of spotting deer, wild turkeys, or even a black bear along the way. The sounds of rushing mountain streams and birdsong replace engine noise, creating one of the most peaceful experiences in the Smokies.
Looking for a unique way to experience Cades Cove? During the summer months, the 11-mile Loop Road closes to motor vehicles every Wednesday, transforming this popular destination into a paradise for cyclists and hikers. The paved loop winds through a picturesque valley surrounded by mountain peaks, offering spectacular views, historic churches and homesteads, abundant wildlife, and several short but challenging climbs. Riders seeking a shorter route can take advantage of two convenient bypasses.
Here are my trip tips:
No vehicles allowed on the loop on Wednesdays starting mid-May through September.
A parking pass is required for parking longer than 15 minutes. Buy a day or week pass online (and print) or at a kiosk. The closest kiosk is located just inside the park, coming from Townsend, and at the loop parking lot. Many parking locations do not require a parking tag if your vehicle has a valid, state-issued handicap placard or license plate
There are 4 parking lots: the loop entrance lot, the picnic area lot, the campground lot, and the overflow lot. Be patient.
Nice flush toilets are at the picnic lot and the general store. In the loop, the flush toilets are located at the Mill, at the halfway point.
See the National Park website for more details
While Vehicle-Free Wednesdays have become one of the most popular experiences in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, don't let the crowds discourage you. Park Rangers actively manage parking areas and traffic flow throughout the day, and spaces often open up faster than expected as visitors come and go. Arrive with a little patience and flexibility, and you'll be rewarded with one of the most memorable outdoor adventures the Smokies have to offer.
Don't have a bike? Need an Electric Bike? No problem. In nearby Townsend, Vee Hollow offers bicycle and eBike rentals with up to 24 hours of riding time. Spend the day exploring Cades Cove, cruise the paved greenway trails in Townsend, or combine both adventures for an unforgettable day in the Smokies.
