Black Hills of South Dakota: Hidden Gems
Published: 2026
Planning a trip to the Black Hills? This spectacular region in South Dakota spans more than 1.2 million acres and is one of America's premier road-trip destinations. From the iconic faces of Mount Rushmore National Memorial to the scenic curves of Needles Highway, the wildlife of Custer State Park, the underground wonders of Wind Cave National Park, the granite summit of Black Elk Peak, the peaceful beauty of Sylvan Lake, the towering monolith of Devils Tower National Monument, and the impressive Crazy Horse Memorial, the Black Hills offers unforgettable adventures for every traveler.
Charming mountain towns are scattered throughout the Black Hills of South Dakota, each offering its own unique history and personality. Explore Keystone, home to Mount Rushmore; Hill City, known for its art galleries and the scenic 1880 Train; Custer, the gateway to Custer State Park; Hot Springs, famous for its natural warm springs and nearby Wind Cave National Park; and the legendary Old West town of Deadwood, where Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane are buried. Every August, the region welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors for the world-famous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, while the Black Hills' rich Gold Rush history can still be experienced through historic mines, museums, and preserved frontier towns.
